Natural Wax vs Paraffin Wax: What’s the Difference and Why Does It Matter?

Natural Wax vs Paraffin Wax: What’s the Difference and Why Does It Matter?

Have you ever wondered what your candle is actually made from?

It’s probably not something most of us think about when choosing a candle.

We’re usually drawn to the fragrance first. We pick something that smells lovely, suits our home or creates the feeling we’re looking for.

Something fresh and uplifting.

Soft and calming.

Warm and comforting.

But underneath the fragrance, there’s another important part of every candle.

The wax.

There are several different types of candle wax available, and one of the most common is paraffin wax.

At Cubbyhole Candles & Melts, I choose to make my candles using natural wax instead.

But why?

And is one really better than the other?

I thought I’d share a little more about the differences between natural wax and paraffin, why so many candle companies use paraffin, and why natural wax feels like the right choice for my little business.

What is paraffin wax?

Paraffin wax is a petroleum-derived wax that has been used in candle making for many years.

It’s one of the most widely used candle waxes in the world, particularly among larger candle manufacturers.

There are some very practical reasons for this.

Paraffin wax holds fragrance well, can produce a strong scent throw and can be formulated to give a consistent burn.

It’s also readily available, relatively inexpensive and well suited to producing candles on a large scale.

For large manufacturers making thousands of candles, paraffin can simply make commercial sense.

Do well-known candle brands use paraffin wax?

Yes.

Many large and well-known candle companies have used paraffin wax or wax blends containing paraffin in some of their products.

You may even have paraffin candles in your home already without ever having thought about the type of wax they contain.

And that’s completely understandable.

Most of us choose candles because we love the fragrance, the way they look or how they make our homes feel.

The type of wax isn't always the first thing we think about.

Why is paraffin wax so popular?

There are several reasons why candle manufacturers choose paraffin wax.

It holds fragrance extremely well, which can help candles produce a strong scent both before and while they are burning.

It can also be formulated to burn consistently when paired with the correct wick and fragrance.

From a manufacturing point of view, paraffin is easy to work with and is well suited to large-scale production.

And perhaps most importantly for larger companies, it is generally more cost-effective than many natural waxes, therefore creating a low price for customers.

So, there are plenty of reasons why paraffin remains one of the most commonly used candle waxes.

Are paraffin candles unsafe?

This is where the conversation around candle wax can sometimes become confusing.

There are lots of claims online suggesting that paraffin candles are toxic, dangerous or should never be burned in your home.

I don't believe in using fear to sell my products.

Current evidence does not support saying that every paraffin candle is unsafe simply because it contains paraffin wax.

High-quality, fully refined paraffin wax is widely used in candle making, and the way any candle is made, wicked and burned can affect how it performs.

All candles produce emissions when they burn.

Soot and smoke are often associated with incomplete combustion, which can happen when a wick is too long, a candle is placed in a draught or it isn't burned correctly.

This can happen with candles made from paraffin wax or natural wax.

That's one of the reasons good candle care is so important, whatever type of candle you choose to burn.

Keeping your wick trimmed, placing your candle away from draughts and following the manufacturer's burning instructions can all help your candle burn as intended.

So, why do I choose natural wax?

For me, choosing natural wax isn't about saying that paraffin candles are bad.

It's about choosing an ingredient that feels right for Cubbyhole Candles & Melts.

I wanted to use a wax that reflected the kind of business I wanted to build and the products I wanted to make.

My candles are handmade in small batches here in Lancashire.

I choose fragrances carefully.

I test my candles to make sure the wax, fragrance and wick work beautifully together.

And I want every product I send out into the world to feel like it has come from a real person and a small business that genuinely cares about what it makes.

Using natural wax is simply part of that.

Natural wax comes from renewable sources

One of the biggest reasons I choose natural wax is that it can be made from renewable, plant-based sources.

Natural candle waxes can include soy, coconut and rapeseed waxes, along with blends of different plant-based ingredients.

Paraffin, on the other hand, is derived from petroleum, which is a non-renewable fossil resource.

Choosing a plant-based wax feels more closely aligned with the values behind Cubbyhole Candles & Melts and the way I want to make home fragrance.

What about soot?

You may have heard that natural wax candles are "soot-free."

That's not a claim I make.

Any candle flame can produce soot if the candle isn't burning correctly.

An untrimmed wick, a draughty room or burning a candle for too long can all contribute to visible smoke and soot.

However, well-made natural wax candles can offer a lovely, clean burn when they are properly formulated and cared for.

This is why I always recommend trimming your wick before each burn and following the candle care instructions that come with your candle.

A little candle care can make a big difference to how beautifully your candle burns.

What about fragrance?

Paraffin wax is known for its excellent fragrance performance.

It holds fragrance well and can create a strong scent throw, which is one of the reasons it's so widely used by large candle manufacturers and massed produced in factories.

But natural wax candles can also give a beautiful fragrance experience.

Creating a good candle isn't simply about adding as much fragrance as possible.

The wax, fragrance oil and wick all need to work together.

Different fragrances behave differently in wax, which is why I test my candles carefully before adding them to the Cubbyhole collection.

For me, the aim isn't to create the strongest candle possible.

It's to create a fragrance that fills your space beautifully and helps create the feeling you want in your home.

Natural wax vs paraffin wax: the main differences

So, what's the difference?

Paraffin wax is petroleum-derived, while natural waxes are generally made using plant-based, renewable ingredients.

Paraffin is often more cost-effective and particularly well suited to large-scale candle production.

It is also known for its excellent fragrance performance.

Natural waxes can behave differently depending on the wax blend used and often require careful testing to find the right combination of wax, fragrance and wick.

For Cubbyhole Candles & Melts, choosing natural wax is about using a plant-based ingredient that reflects the values of my small business and the kind of products I want to make.

Neither choice changes the most important thing about burning candles at home.

A candle should always be well made, properly tested and burned according to the manufacturer's candle care instructions.

More than simply making your home smell lovely

I've always believed that home fragrance can be about so much more than scent.

It's the candle or melts you light while enjoying your morning coffee.

The fragrance that makes your home feel welcoming when you walk through the door.

The scent that becomes part of your evening routine and reminds you that the busy part of the day is over.

Those small everyday rituals matter to me.

They're at the heart of Cubbyhole Candles.

My products are made to help you create a home that feels warm, comforting and somewhere you genuinely enjoy spending time.

Natural wax is simply one part of that story.

So, which candle & Melts wax should you choose?

There isn't one answer that will be right for everyone.

Some people choose candles based entirely on fragrance.

Others look for plant-based ingredients, handmade products or candles made by independent businesses.

The important thing is knowing what you're buying and choosing products that feel right for you and your home.

At Cubbyhole Candles & Melts, I'll always be open about the choices I make and why I make them.

I choose natural wax because it reflects the values behind my little business.

Thoughtful ingredients.

Beautiful fragrance.

Small-batch making.

And home fragrance created to bring a little more comfort, calm and enjoyment to your everyday moments at home.

Because for me, making candles & Melts has never been about simply making your home smell lovely.

It's about how you want to feel when you're there.
